NBA PLAYER PROPS AND AWARD RACES
NBA player props are bets on one player’s stats in a game, such as points, rebounds, assists or made threes, usually priced as an over/under. Award odds price the season-long races, and a panel of 100 media members votes on all six major awards. MVP, Defensive Player of the Year and Most Improved Player also require 65 games played, while Rookie of the Year, Sixth Man and Coach of the Year don’t.
How NBA player props are set
A prop line starts with a projection, built mostly from expected minutes and how much of the offense runs through the player, then adjusted for the pace of the matchup. The line is set near the projected median, so over and under are close to even before the margin is added.
Minutes drive almost everything, which is why props move hardest on the injury report. When a starter is ruled out, his shots and touches go somewhere, and the teammates who absorb them see their lines rise. Late scratches on the second night of a back-to-back hit props the same way they hit spreads.
Combination props such as points plus rebounds plus assists stack several stats into one line. Same-game parlays tie props from one game together, and the margin compounds across every leg.
Where props are deepest
DraftKings and FanDuel post the longest NBA prop menus, with alternate lines, milestone ladders and same-game parlays that mix props from one game. Prop prices at sportsbooks often carry more margin than spreads do. Prediction markets list fewer props per game, and the price on any one depends on how many people are trading it, though on Novig a pre-game prop that does trade carries no fee.
How NBA awards are decided
A global panel of 100 media members votes on the regular-season awards after the season ends, and Ernst & Young tabulates the ballots. MVP voters rank five players, with 10, 7, 5, 3 and 1 points for first through fifth. The other awards rank three, scored 5, 3 and 1. The most points wins.
The 65-game rule from the 2023 collective bargaining agreement applies to MVP, Defensive Player of the Year, Most Improved Player and the All-NBA and All-Defensive teams. A game counts if the player logs at least 20 minutes, and two games of 15 to 20 minutes also count, so a player needs 20 minutes in at least 63 games. Players who fall short can appeal under an extraordinary-circumstances clause.
In 2026, Luka Doncic and Cade Cunningham won appeals after playing 64 and 63 games, and Anthony Edwards was denied. The players union has called for the rule to be abolished or reformed, and Commissioner Adam Silver defended it, saying, “I think it is working.” A star’s games-played count is part of every MVP and Defensive Player of the Year price.
MVP odds
MVP goes to the player the panel rates most valuable, with no fixed definition. Voters tend to weigh individual production and team record together, and a 65-game minimum keeps anyone who misses too much time out of the race. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander won the 2025-26 award with 83 of 100 first-place votes.
Rookie of the Year odds
Rookie of the Year is open to first-year players and isn’t subject to the 65-game rule. Cooper Flagg won in 2025-26 with 412 points to Kon Knueppel’s 386. Rookie prices move with minutes and role more than raw talent, since a rookie on a deep roster may not get the shots.
Defensive Player of the Year odds
Defensive Player of the Year carries the 65-game minimum. Big men who protect the rim have won most of the recent votes, because their impact shows up in blocks and opponent shooting near the basket. Victor Wembanyama won the 2025-26 award.
Sixth Man of the Year odds
Sixth Man of the Year goes to the best reserve, and a player has to come off the bench in more games than he starts to be eligible. The 65-game rule doesn’t apply. A sixth man who moves into the starting five midseason can play himself out of eligibility. Keldon Johnson won in 2025-26.
Most Improved Player odds
Most Improved Player has no written standard beyond the 65-game minimum, so the ballot rewards a jump in role and production from one season to the next. Nickeil Alexander-Walker won in 2025-26.
Coach of the Year odds
Coach of the Year is voted on by the same media panel and has no games requirement. Voters tend to reward a team that beats its preseason expectations, so the market tracks win totals, and a coach whose team clears its number by a wide margin moves to the front. Joe Mazzulla of the Celtics won in 2025-26.
