How to Bet on the NBA: A Beginner’s Guide to Basketball Betting

How to Bet on the NBA: A Beginner’s Guide to Basketball Betting

Key takeaways

  • American odds: a minus number is what you risk to win $100, and a plus number is what a $100 bet wins. At -110 you risk $110 to win $100.

  • Core markets: every NBA game has a point spread, a moneyline and a total. Props, parlays, futures and live bets run on the same odds math.

  • Cost: with -110 on both sides, a bettor has to win 52.38% of bets to break even. A pre-game bet with no vig and no fee breaks even at 50%.

  • Scoring: NBA teams averaged 115.6 points a game in 2025-26, and the median game finished with 231 combined points.

  • Schedule: each team plays 82 games and averages 14.2 back-to-backs in 2026-27, so rest and injury news moves lines on game day.

How betting on the NBA works

Betting on the NBA means putting money on an outcome at a stated price. The outcome can be a single game, one player’s stat line or a whole season. The price is the odds. It sets what a winning bet pays, and it also shows how likely the market thinks that outcome is.

The 2026-27 regular season runs from Oct. 20 to April 11, with 82 games per team, so there’s something on the board almost every night for six months. Scores run high and final margins spread wide. Lineups also change late: a star who sits with a sore ankle, or for rest, can move a line in the hours before tip-off.

How to read American odds

US sportsbooks quote American odds. A negative number is how much you’d risk to win $100, and a positive number is what a $100 bet wins. A winning bet returns the stake on top of the profit.

At -150, you’re risking $150 to win $100. At +150, $100 wins $150. The ratio holds at any size, so $15 at -150 wins $10.

Odds also carry an implied probability. For a minus price, divide the odds by the odds plus 100: -150 is 150 / 250, or 60%. For a plus price, divide 100 by the odds plus 100: +150 is 100 / 250, or 40%.

The standard price on NBA spreads and totals is -110, which means risking $110 to win $100. That implies 52.38%, and with both sides at -110 the pair adds up to 104.76%. The 4.76 points over 100% is the vig, the book’s margin for taking the bet. It’s why a bettor laying -110 has to win 52.38% of the time just to break even.

The main NBA bet types

Every NBA game carries a spread, a moneyline and a total. Most other bets are slices or combinations of those three, and the NBA spread, moneyline and totals guide works through each one with examples.

Point spreads

The spread is a handicap on the final margin. Take a hypothetical home favorite at -6.5 and a road underdog at +6.5. A bet on the favorite needs a win by seven or more. A bet on the underdog cashes if it wins outright or loses by six or fewer. Spreads usually cost -110 on each side, and a half-point spread can’t push.

Moneylines

A moneyline is a pick on who wins. With a favorite at -250 and an underdog at +205, $100 on the favorite wins $40 and $100 on the underdog wins $205. NBA overtime periods repeat until someone wins, so a full-game moneyline never ends in a tie.

Totals

A total, or over/under, is a bet on the combined score. NBA teams averaged 115.6 points a game in 2025-26, according to Basketball Reference, and half of that season’s games finished between 217 and 245 combined points. With a total of 228.5, a 117-112 final adds up to 229 and the over wins. A 110-108 final adds up to 218 and the under wins.

Half and quarter lines

Books also post spreads, moneylines and totals for each half and each quarter. They’re graded on that period alone, so a first-half bet is settled at halftime. A half or a quarter can end level, and on a two-way line that’s usually a push.

Player props

A player prop is a bet on one player’s stat line: points, rebounds, assists, made threes, or points, rebounds and assists added together (PRA). Most are an over/under on a half-point line. The NBA player props guide covers how they’re priced and what happens when a player sits.

Parlays

A parlay ties two or more bets onto one ticket, and every leg has to win. Three legs at -110 each pay about +596, so a $20 parlay returns $139.16 if all three hit. If each leg is a coin flip, all three hit 12.5% of the time, and a fair price for that is +700. The gap between +596 and +700 is the book’s margin compounding across three bets.

Futures

Futures settle later in the season: the champion, a conference winner, a team’s regular-season win total or the MVP. A $20 bet at +1600 on a title pays $320 in profit. The money’s tied up until the market settles, which for a championship bet placed in October is about eight months. Award bets carry an extra condition: a player needs at least 65 regular-season games to be eligible for MVP, Defensive Player of the Year or the All-NBA teams. Current prices are on the NBA futures odds page.

Live betting

Live betting opens after tip-off, with prices that update through the game. NBA scoring comes in runs, so a live line can travel a long way in a few possessions, and the price can change between tapping a selection and confirming it. Live markets often carry a wider margin than pre-game lines, and that’s on top of a price that won’t sit still.

How to place an NBA bet

Each state decides whether sports betting is legal and sets the minimum age, so you’ll want to start by checking where NBA betting is legal. After that, the process doesn’t change much from app to app.

  1. Open an account: sign up with a licensed sportsbook or a prediction market available in your state, verify your identity and location, and deposit.

  2. Find the game: pick the NBA from the sports menu and you’ll see the night’s matchups.

  3. Add a selection: tap the price you want, such as the favorite at -6.5 for -110, and it lands on the bet slip.

  4. Enter a stake: type the amount you want to risk and check the payout the slip calculates.

  5. Confirm: submit the bet and wait for the confirmation. Bets settle after the final buzzer, and winnings land in your balance once it’s graded.

Adding a second selection can turn two singles into a parlay unless you switch it back. Some apps also have a setting that decides whether live bets accept price changes automatically.

Sportsbooks and prediction markets

A sportsbook is the house. It sets the line, takes the other side of your bet and builds the vig into the price. Sportsbooks are licensed state by state.

A prediction market matches bettors with each other. Prices are quoted in cents per contract, and a contract pays $1 if the outcome happens, so a price of 55 cents implies 55%, about -122 in American odds. These platforms are regulated federally by the CFTC, several states have challenged that in court, and availability can change.

Because the price comes from other bettors, a prediction market doesn’t have to add a vig. Costs come as fees instead, and they vary by platform and bet type. On Novig, pre-game straight bets carry no fee for either side, so a game the market sees as a coin flip trades at 50 cents and breaks even at 50%, against 52.38% at -110. Live trades, futures and parlays there carry taker fees, set out in its published fee schedule. App-by-app comparisons are in the best NBA betting apps guide.

What’s different about betting the NBA

  • Rest: teams average 14.2 back-to-backs in the 2026-27 schedule, per the NBA. In ESPN final scores from 2021-22 through 2025-26, home teams won 55.3% of games overall, 60.0% when only the visitor was on the second night of a back-to-back, and 45.9% when only the home team was. Those splits don’t adjust for team strength.

  • Injury reports: teams must list a player’s status by 5 p.m. local time the day before a game, or 1 p.m. on game day for the second night of a back-to-back, and the report updates until tip-off.

  • Load management: the league’s player participation policy requires teams to make stars available for national TV and NBA Cup games. Rest days elsewhere still show up on the injury report, sometimes late.

  • Margins: from 2021-22 through 2025-26, the most common NBA final margin was six points, in 5.92% of games. About 15% of NFL games land on three, so a half point on an NBA spread decides far fewer bets.

  • Line shopping: books post different numbers on the same game. Getting -5.5 instead of -6, or -105 instead of -110, adds up over a season.

  • Overtime: NBA overtime periods last five minutes, and full-game spreads, totals and moneylines count them at most sportsbooks.

Bankroll basics

A bankroll is money set aside for betting and nothing else. It should be an amount you could lose in full without it touching rent or bills.

The usual way to size bets is in units, where one unit is a small fixed share of the bankroll, often 1% to 2%. On a $500 bankroll that’s $5 to $10 a bet. A bettor who plays a few games a night will place hundreds of bets before the playoffs, and flat units keep a bad week from costing more than a small slice of the roll.

A record of each bet, the price and the result shows whether something is working faster than memory does. Chasing a loss with a bigger bet on the late West Coast game undoes the unit system in one wager.

NBA betting FAQ

What does -110 mean in NBA betting?

It means risking $110 to win $100, or any amount in the same ratio, such as $11 to win $10. It’s the standard price on NBA spreads and totals, and it implies a 52.38% chance of winning.

What does +5.5 mean in basketball betting?

The team is a 5.5-point underdog. A bet on it wins if the team wins outright or loses by five or fewer. A half-point spread can’t push.

Do NBA bets include overtime?

Full-game spreads, totals and moneylines do at most sportsbooks. First-half and first-quarter bets don’t, since they’re settled before overtime could start.

What is the easiest NBA bet for a beginner?

The moneyline, since it only asks who wins. Heavy favorites are expensive on it, which is why many bettors use the spread on lopsided games.

When is the best time to bet an NBA game?

NBA lines often move on injury news, which comes out the day before a game and again on game day. Betting early locks a number before that news lands, and betting late lets you see who’s playing. Either way, a bet keeps the price it was placed at.
