NBA Player Props Explained: How Points, Rebounds and Assists Bets Work

NBA Player Props Explained: How Points, Rebounds and Assists Bets Work

Key takeaways

  • Definition: a player prop is a bet on one player’s stat line, usually an over/under on points, rebounds, assists, made threes or a combination such as PRA.

  • Pricing: a sportsbook prop at -115 on both sides leaves the book about 6.5% of the money wagered, against 4.55% on a -110 spread.

  • Minutes: a prop line is a projection of minutes and production, so injury and rest news that changes a player’s minutes moves the line.

  • Voids: at most sportsbooks, a prop is void if the player never takes the court and stands once he does.

  • Where to bet: DraftKings and FanDuel carry the deepest NBA prop menus and same-game parlay tools. On Novig, a pre-game prop carries no fee on either side.

What an NBA player prop is

A player prop isolates one player’s night. Most are an over/under on a half-point line, so a points line of 24.5 means the over needs 25 and the under needs 24 or fewer. Others are yes/no questions, such as whether a player records a triple-double or scores the game’s first points.

With five players per side on the floor and a team’s stars taking a large share of its shots, one player’s stat line follows closely from his minutes and his role. Props use the same odds math as the rest of the board, covered in how to bet on the NBA.

Combination props add the stats together. A player with 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists posts 39 for PRA and clears 38.5, even though he missed a 9.5 rebounds line on his own.

Why threes props swing

Made threes are a small-number stat, so they swing. Take a hypothetical shooter who attempts seven threes a game and makes 36% of them, the league’s rate in 2025-26 according to Basketball Reference. He averages 2.52 makes, so a line of 2.5 is close to a coin flip: if each shot is independent, he makes three or more on 49.06% of nights. He also goes 0 or 1 for 7 on 21.72% of nights and makes five or more on 6.25%. A points line absorbs some of that swing through free throws and twos, while a threes line has nothing else to lean on.

How NBA prop lines are set

A prop line starts as a projection: expected minutes times the player’s production per minute, adjusted for the opponent, the expected pace of the game and which teammates are in or out. After that, the line and the price move with betting and with lineup news.

Say a sportsbook posts a guard at 24.5 points, -115 on both the over and the under. If the book takes $115 on each side, it holds $230, pays the winner $215 and keeps $15, about 6.5% of the money wagered. At -115 you’d need to win 53.49% of the time to break even, against 52.38% at -110.

Reading a prop price

Take a hypothetical forward at 7.5 rebounds, over -120 and under +100. The over implies 54.55% and the under 50%, which adds up to 104.55%. With the margin stripped out, that’s 52.17% for the over and 47.83% for the under. If the opposing starting center is ruled out an hour before tip-off and the line moves to 8.5, a bettor who took the over at 7.5 keeps 7.5. The NBA spread, moneyline and totals guide covers the same conversion for game lines.

Minutes, injuries and late news

Minutes drive almost every NBA prop, and minutes depend on who else is available. When a starting guard is ruled out, his shots and touches go to teammates, and books raise their points and assists lines.

The league’s injury report sets the clock. Teams must list a player’s status by 5 p.m. local time the day before a game, or by 1 p.m. on game day for the second night of a back-to-back. Game-day reports are due between 11 a.m. and 1 p.m. local time, and the report keeps updating until tip-off.

The NBA’s player participation policy, in place since 2023-24, requires teams to make stars available for national TV and NBA Cup games, and the league fined the Jazz $500,000 and the Pacers $100,000 in February 2026 over healthy players sitting. Teams average 14.2 back-to-backs in the 2026-27 schedule, each with a 1 p.m. reporting deadline on the second night.

What happens when a player sits

At most sportsbooks, a prop is void if the player never takes the court, and it stands once he does, even if he leaves after three minutes with an injury. In a parlay, a voided leg usually drops out and the ticket pays on the remaining legs at a shorter price. Each app’s house rules set out its own version, market by market.

Live props

Many books keep props open after tip-off and reprice them as the game goes. A player who picks up early fouls or sits through a blowout fourth quarter loses minutes his pre-game line assumed, and the live line drops with them. Like other live markets, live props can change price between tapping a selection and confirming it.

Correlated props and same-game parlays

Props from the same game aren’t independent. A point guard’s assists and his center’s points rise together, since many of those baskets come off his passes, and an overtime period lifts every player’s counting stats at once. A star and his backup share the same minutes, so overs on both tend to work against each other.

Sportsbooks price same-game parlays with that correlation in mind, so a same-game parlay usually pays less than multiplying the legs’ separate odds would. FanDuel’s SGP+ and DraftKings’ SGPx go a step further and combine a same-game parlay with legs or parlays from other games on one ticket.

Where NBA prop menus are deepest

DraftKings and FanDuel post the longest NBA prop menus. DraftKings lists first points scorer, double-double and triple-double markets next to its stat lines, and FanDuel sells milestone props such as 30+ points. Both build their margin into the odds on each side.

Prediction markets list props as contracts that pay $1 if the stat line hits. Novig lists NBA player props, including points and assists overs with alternate lines, and a single pre-game prop is a straight trade, which carries no fee for either side under its published fee schedule. An over at 50 cents costs $50 per 100 contracts and returns $100 if it hits, while a sportsbook at -115 asks $57.50 to win the same $50. Prop counts on prediction markets generally run shorter than at the large sportsbooks, and prices on lightly traded players depend on who’s posting orders.

NBA player props FAQ

What does PRA mean in NBA props?

Points plus rebounds plus assists. A line of 38.5 PRA is cleared by any mix that adds up to 39 or more, such as 26 points, eight rebounds and five assists.

What happens to an NBA prop if the player doesn’t play?

At most sportsbooks it’s void and the stake is refunded. Once the player takes the court, the bet stands however long he plays.

Do NBA player props include overtime?

Full-game props count overtime stats at most sportsbooks. A five-minute overtime period gives every player on the floor more time to reach his line.

What is a milestone prop?

A bet that a player reaches a set number, such as 30+ points or 10+ assists, at a single price. There’s no under. It works like a one-sided alternate line, and higher thresholds pay longer prices.

Can you parlay NBA props from the same game?

Yes, at most sportsbooks. Same-game parlays are priced with the correlation between legs built in, so they’ll usually pay less than the legs would as separate bets combined.
