NBA Spread, Moneyline and Totals Explained: How Each Bet Works

NBA Spread, Moneyline and Totals Explained: How Each Bet Works

Key takeaways

  • Spread: a handicap on the final margin. The favorite has to win by more than the number, and the underdog covers if it wins outright or doesn’t lose by that much.

  • Moneyline: a pick on the winner. NBA overtime repeats until someone wins, so a full-game moneyline can’t push.

  • Total: a bet on combined points. The median NBA game finished with 231 points in 2025-26, up from 221 in 2021-22.

  • Break-even: -110 implies 52.38%, so that’s the win rate a bettor laying -110 needs on spreads and totals. At even money with no fee, it’s 50%.

  • Margins: no single final margin came up in more than 5.92% of NBA games from 2021-22 through 2025-26, so the half point doesn’t matter as much as it does in football.

The three core NBA markets

Every NBA game comes with a spread, a moneyline and a total, side by side in American odds. Here’s a hypothetical listing:

Team

Spread

Moneyline

Total

Road team

+4.5 (-110)

+160

Over 226.5 (-110)

Home team

-4.5 (-110)

-190

Under 226.5 (-110)

Here the home team has to win by five or more to cover -4.5, while its moneyline at -190 cashes on any win, and the total depends only on whether the teams combine for 227 points or more. The odds math behind all three is in how to bet on the NBA.

How the NBA point spread works

The spread is a handicap that makes two unequal teams about even to bet. In the listing above, the home team at -4.5 wins if it wins by five or more. The road team at +4.5 wins if it wins the game or loses by four or fewer. Here’s how three finals grade:

Final score

Margin

Home -4.5

Road +4.5

Home 112, Road 104

Home by 8

Wins

Loses

Home 110, Road 107

Home by 3

Loses

Wins

Road 118, Home 115

Road by 3

A half-point spread can’t push. On a whole number such as -5, a five-point win is a push and both sides get their stakes back.

Why key numbers matter less in the NBA

Football margins bunch up because points come in field goals and touchdowns. Basketball points come one, two and three at a time, more than 200 of them a game, so final margins spread out. In ESPN final scores for the five regular seasons from 2021-22 through 2025-26, 6,150 games in all, these were the most common margins:

Final margin

Games

5.38%

4 points

5.35%

9 points

325

5.28%

5 points

5.27%

Every margin from two through nine came up in between 5.12% and 5.92% of games. In the NFL, three points alone decides about 15% of games, and there’s nothing like that in the NBA. Buying a half point from -6.5 to -6 doesn’t change the result unless the game ends on six, and paying -120 for it raises the break-even rate from 52.38% to 54.55%. In the same sample, 52.9% of games were decided by 10 or more points and 14.5% by three or fewer.

How NBA spreads are set and why they move

Oddsmakers open a spread from team ratings adjusted for home court, rest and who’s expected to play, and betting moves it from there. Home teams won 55.3% of games over those five seasons. When only the visitor was on the second night of a back-to-back, home teams won 60.0%. When only the home team was, they won 45.9%. Those splits don’t adjust for team strength.

Availability news moves NBA spreads on game day. A bet keeps the number it was placed at, so a bettor who took the home team at -4.5 in the morning still needs only a five-point win if a road starter is ruled out and the game closes at -6.5.

How the NBA moneyline works

The moneyline drops the margin and moves the gap between the teams into the price. In the listing, the home favorite is -190 and the road underdog is +160. $100 on the favorite wins $52.63, and $100 on the underdog wins $160.

Overtime repeats in five-minute periods until someone wins, so a full-game NBA moneyline is always a win or a loss. There’s no push.

Moneyline or spread?

A favorite’s moneyline and its spread both cash when it wins by five or more, and both lose when it loses. They split on wins by one to four points, where the moneyline cashes and -4.5 loses. Finals decided by one to four points, either way, made up 19.85% of games in the five-season sample.

Heavy favorites are where the two bets drift furthest apart. At -400, a bettor risks $400 to win $100 and needs the team to win 80% of the time. A spread bet on the same team risks $110 to win $100 and needs it to cover.

How NBA totals work

A total is a bet on combined points, and who wins doesn’t matter. With the total at 226.5, a 115-112 final adds up to 227 and the over wins. A 110-112 final adds up to 222 and the under wins. Full-game totals count overtime at most sportsbooks, and five more minutes of scoring from both teams usually helps the over.

Teams averaged 110.6 points a game in 2021-22 and 115.6 in 2025-26, according to Basketball Reference, and the median combined score in the ESPN results rose from 221 to 231 over the same span. Half of 2025-26 games finished between 217 and 245 points, so a game that lands 15 points off its total isn’t unusual.

Pace drives totals. Pace is possessions per 48 minutes, and the league average was 99.4 in 2025-26. Two fast teams produce more shots and more points, and two slow teams produce fewer. Totals also move on injury news, since a missing scorer or rim protector changes the projection for both sides.

Half, quarter and team totals

Books post spreads, moneylines and totals for each half and each quarter, graded on that period alone. Overtime counts toward second-half markets at most books and never touches first-half or first-quarter bets. A team total covers one team’s points and ignores the opponent’s.

Break-even math: what -110 costs

The price on a spread or total is usually -110. Converted to a probability, that’s 110 / 210, or 52.38%. If one bettor puts $110 on each side, the book takes in $220, pays the winner $210 and keeps $10, which is 4.55% of the money wagered.

Here’s what 100 bets of $110 at -110 return at four different records:

Record

Won

Lost

Net

50-50

$5,000

$5,500

-$500

52-48

$5,200

$5,280

53-47

$5,300

$5,170

+$130

55-45

$5,500

$4,950

+$550

A bettor who picks winners at a coin-flip rate loses $500 over those 100 bets, and 52 wins still isn’t enough.

Converting moneylines to probability

  • Minus odds: odds / (odds + 100). -190 is 190 / 290, or 65.52%.

  • Plus odds: 100 / (odds + 100). +160 is 100 / 260, or 38.46%.

  • The margin: 65.52% plus 38.46% is 103.98%. The 3.98 points over 100% is the book’s cut on that pair.

The same bets on a prediction market

On a prediction market, the cost comes as a separate fee. Novig charges no fee on pre-game straight trades, so a spread or total the market sees as a coin flip trades at 50 cents, 100 contracts cost $50 and return $100, and break-even is 50%. A moneyline contract’s price is the implied probability: 65 cents is 65%, about -186 in American odds. Live trades and parlays there carry a taker fee. Apps that offer both models are compared in the best NBA betting apps guide.

NBA spread, moneyline and totals FAQ

What does -4.5 mean in NBA betting?

The team is a 4.5-point favorite. A bet on it wins if the team wins by five or more and loses otherwise. A half-point spread can’t push.

Can an NBA moneyline bet push?

Not on a full game. Overtime continues until there’s a winner. First-half and quarter moneylines can end level, and a two-way line on a tied period is usually graded as a push.

Do NBA totals include overtime?

Full-game totals do at most sportsbooks unless the market says otherwise. First-half and first-quarter totals don’t.

What is the average NBA total?

In 2025-26 the median game finished with 231 combined points, and teams averaged 115.6 points each. Season-long markets such as win totals are on the NBA futures odds page, and player lines are explained in the NBA player props guide.
